Philomela’s concerts in the Finland 100 series – Christmas Concert

Philomela sings life into the years 1917–1918 in Finland

The three concerts by Philomela use human voice, musical instruments, light and darkness to capture the strong but still often silenced emotions evoked by the events in 1917–1918. The audience is invited into a three-dimensional soundscape, to experience the struggles of an emerging country.
Philomela’s concerts in the Finland 100 series are linked to events that took place a hundred years ago. The series starts on 25 February 2017 with a concert themed around the general strike, continues with a Christmas concert on 9 December 2017, featuring the women’s choir of the Eparchy of St. Petersburg, and ends with the Silent Night concert that commemorates the victims of the civil war, held on 6 January 2018.

Suomenlinna Church, Suomenlinna C 43

Suomenlinna Church was inaugurated in 1854. It was originally built as an Orthodox church and known as Cathedral of Aleksander Nevsky since 1891. After Finland’s independence, all the Orthodox items were removed from the church, and it was converted into a Lutheran garrison church on 22 December 1918. The main central tower lost its onion-shaped domes and became rectangular. The exteriors were plastered to form an even surface and a gaslight lighthouse was installed in the tower. The new Suomenlinna Church was inaugurated in 1929.

The Christmas concert by Philomela and the women’s choir of the Eparchy of St. Petersburg will honour the past and present of Suomenlinna Church.

Duration 1–1.5 hours.

Tickets: EUR 22.50 (incl. the online shop fee)
