Operating under the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the Governing Body of Suomenlinna falls within the purview of the Minister of Culture and Sport. The operations of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna are managed by the Ministry’s Department for Cultural, Sport and Youth Policy.

Organisation

The highest policymaking body in the Governing Body of Suomenlinna is a Board that meets 3 to 4 times a year. The Board consists of representatives of four central government departments, the City of Helsinki, the National Board of Antiquities, Senate Properties and the residents of Suomenlinna.

The Director of the bureau and a Managing Committee are responsible for planning and implementing the operations of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna. The functions of the bureau are divided into four units led by the manager: the administration unit, the planning unit, the construction unit and the property unit.

All of the offices of these units are located on Iso Mustasaari, the main island. The office of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna is also located in Suomenlinna, in administrative building C 40. There is another customer service point in the Visitor Centre, C 74.

Director Jaakko Antti-Poika

Jaakko Antti-Poika
Jaakko Antti-Poika, the Director of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna, is pleased with the broadly based administrative model of the bureau.

“The good operational capacity of our administrative model frequently comes up in discussions with the representatives of international World Heritage sites. Suomenlinna is restored and managed with a fixed State budget according to a development plan that was made more than 35 years ago. In World Heritage sites with several owners and the need to collecting funding from several sources conflicts of interest and the fragmented nature of the funding may even endanger the value of the site.”
