Renovation

The main function of the Construction unit is the upkeep of Suomenlinna by adapting traditional construction methods to the new uses of the fortress.

The thousands of windows, doors and floors of the fortress are renovated regularly. Renovation work on ovens and cookers often means demolishing and remasoning old fireplaces that have been condemned. Curators are responsible for preserving, examining and documenting the old surfaces and building components on these worksites.

The residential apartments and facilities that have been renovated in the old workshops, bakeries and other buildings of the bastion fortress are all unique. The doors and equipment for the renovated kitchens and bathrooms are manufactured at the workshop of the Governing Body where necessary, as old walls and doorframes do not conform to modern standards.

The master builders of the Construction unit are in charge of purchasing and management for the projects. Some of the work is contracted out. The Governing Body works with the Suomenlinna Prison, and the prison’s civilian master builders manage joint projects.
