Tourism co-ordination

In terms of visitor numbers, Suomenlinna is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Finland. Every year some 700,000 people visit the islands, and nearly 30 businesses and communities provide tourist services in Suomenlinna. The Governing Body of Suomenlinna is responsible for developing and co-ordinating tourism in Suomenlinna, and the bureau is also in charge of the tourist information point at the Visitor Centre in the heart of the fortress.

Visitor Centre

The objective of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna is to make Suomenlinna better known as a World Heritage site by enhancing visitor access to information about the history of the maritime fortress and garrison town. Suomenlinna is marketed as an attractive place of interest for tourists, and as a year-round meeting and conference venue. Marketing also focuses on providing information about tourist services, products and events in Suomenlinna. The businesses operating in the fortress are independently responsible for developing, selling and marketing their products and services.

Tourism is developed in close partnership with tourism operators in Suomenlinna and with the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau. The starting point for developing tourism in the area is to conserve the values upon which protection of the site is based, and to improve the profitability of local enterprises.
