Japanese tea room

Finland’s first traditional Japanese tea room, Tokuyûan (“Place of virtues”) is located on Susisaari island in Suomenlinna, in the red-brick casemate of the bastion Virtue.Tea Room ceremony

The Japanese art of tea (chadô) is studied here and practised in the tea ceremonies according the traditional rituals. The tea room is open for groups upon request or as separately agreed.

How to get there

The Helsinki City Transport ferry operates to the main pier throughout the year, and from there the tea room is about 800 metres away. The waterbus stops at the Visitor Centre pier during summer, and the tea room is about 300 metres from there.

The tokonoma is much like an alcove, and a traditional part of every Japanese house. It is reserved for beautiful and valuable objects. This tokonoma alcove hosts a scroll and a seasonal flower arrangement.
