The Suomenlinna library

The Suomenlinna library has had an active role in the cultural life of the island since 1957. The library operates in the crownwork Ehrensvärd. In addition to the library, the building houses a daycare centre and residential apartments.Library

LibraryThe library in Suomenlinna is Helsinki City Library’s smallest library. The library is primarily targeted at the residents of Suomenlinna, operating like all other public libraries in Finland.

The collection is small, but any material from the Helsinki City Library collections can be ordered for delivery to Suomenlinna. The library also offers a small collection of magazines and journals, as well as the opportunity to use the computer.

How to get there

The Helsinki City Transport ferry operates to the main pier throughout the year, and from there the library is about 300 metres away. The waterbus stops at the Visitor Centre pier during summer, and the library is about 200 metres from there.

Accessibility

The route from the main pier to the library is accessible with a wheelchair. There are some steps at the main entrance. The steps are equipped with handrails on both sides. Upon request, it is also possible to access the library through the side door, where there is only one stone step.

The width of the library toilet door is 80 cm, but the toilet itself is not very spacious. The toilet seat is equipped with support railings on both sides.

Did you know?

The Viapori officers had some unusually versatile libraries. The books were often in Swedish, French or German. Books were loaned out, and often copied by hand. In the 1780s, the regiment minister M. P. Festin was in charge of ordering the books.
