Military Museum’s Manege

The manege exhibition showcases Finnish national defence from the time of independence. Heavy weaponry used in the Winter War (1939–40) and the Continuation War (1941–44) are exhibited. A signal dugout and a combat medic site have been built in the manege.Manege

ManegeThe Viapori fortress artillery manege was built in 1880–81. It operated as a warehouse for the Russian fortress artillery’s heavy artillery material. After Finland gained its independence, the building was still used as an artillery manege. The 76 mm anti-aircraft and 105 mm naval cannons were used as educational material. The western end operated as a movie theatre when necessary. Once new educational facilities for the naval forces and the coastal artillery were built, the manege was handed over to the Military Museum in 1974 to be used as storage. In 1987, the building was renovated as an exhibition hall for the museum.

The manege is only open during the summer season.

How to get there

The Helsinki City Transport ferry operates to the main pier throughout the year, and from there the museum is about 400 metres away. The waterbus stops at the Visitor Centre pier during summer. The museum is about 300 metres from the pier.

Accessibility

The route from the main pier to the manege is accessible with a wheelchair nearly all the way, apart from a small section closer to the museum. The last section of the route is paved with uneven cobblestones.

The front of the entrance is slanting, with small differences in level which are difficult to cross with a wheelchair. The doors are rather large and heavy to open, but museum staff will be happy to assist you as best they can.

The Military Museum is on one floor. There are seats where you can sit and rest. The museum has accessible toilet facilities, which have free space on one side of the toilet seat and are equipped with support railings.
