Suomenlinna Toy Museum

There are thousands of old toys, dolls, teddy bears, toy cars and games in the collections of the toy museum. The oldest of these date back to the beginning of the 1800s. Wartime toys and games are one of the specialities of the museum.Toy Museum

Toy Museums dollsThe powder-coloured wooden villa, next to the defensive wall on Iso Mustasaari island, is one of the few private houses in Suomenlinna. The house was built in 1911 by Captain Vasiljev, who worked in the headquarters of the Viapori fortress.

The villa also hosts the Toy Museum café, which has an outdoor terrace. Tea brewed in the Russian style, coffee and home-made pastries are on offer. The café is famous for Commander Kovanko’s apple pie, served with vanilla sauce.

The Toy Museum shop sells genuine Steiff and Herman teddy bears and Käthe Kruse dolls as well as other souvenirs.

The museum is open daily during the summer season and on weekends during spring and autumn.

How to get there

The Helsinki City Transport service ferry stops in front of the Toy Museum throughout the year. The Helsinki City Transport ferry also operates to the main pier throughout the year, and from there the Toy Museum is about 500 metres away. The waterbus stops at the Visitor Centre pier during summer. The museum is about 400 metres from the pier.

Accessibility

Toy MuseumThe route from the main pier is accessible with a wheelchair almost all the way. The last part of the route is steep.

There are some steps at the entrance, but a wooden ramp can be erected when necessary to allow assisted entrance with a wheelchair. When both of the main entrance doors are open, the doorway is wide enough for a wheelchair.

The inside of the museum is relatively accessible with a wheelchair. The area is spread across one floor, and there are seats in the museum area where you can sit and rest. One of the toilet facilities at the museum is spacious enough for a wheelchair.
