From Viapori Out to Sea photography exhibition

In Suomenlinna lies Viaporin telakka, Finland’s oldest and one of Europe’s oldest active dry docks. After a long and varied history starting from the 1750’s, the dry dock has once again been used to build and repair traditional sailing ships since 1987. The building and reparation work made during winter ends in April, when the ships set sail.

Photographer Björn Elmgren documented the undocking in Viapori in 2018 with film cameras for The Living Suomenlinna research project. The exhibition presents Elmgren’s black and white photos of the undocking procedures, as well as tools and items related to traditional sailing ships.
