Photography Exhibition: Suomenlinna 1918 – 1919
A photography exhibition on Suomenlinna prison camp is open at Suomenlinna Jetty Barracks near the HSL ferry quay.
The Finnish Civil War took place in 27.1.1918–15.5.1918 between the forces of the White Army lead by the Finnish Senate and the Finnish Red Guard lead by the Finnish People’s Delegation. The war ended in the victory of the Whites. After the war, many of the people who fought alongside the Reds or participated in the labour movement, or were suspected of either, were thrown into prison camps that were established around the country – also in Suomenlinna. Suomenlinna prison camp was comprised of six sections, with a total of 10 000 prisoners during the years 1918–1919.
The exhibition is divided into two rooms, the ferry waiting room and the tourist information. The exhibition is open according to the opening hours of these two rooms:
- in the ferry waiting room daily 6 am–2 am
- in the tourist information during the summer season daily 10 am–6 pm
- in the tourist information from 1 October 2018 daily 10 am–4 pm
